Government Digital Service (GDS) collaborated with London College of Communication’s Service Futures Lab to explore the role of designers in supporting better public services and policies.
Forty-one MA Service Design students led by Senior Lecturer Dr Lara Salinas collaborated on the project, focusing on anticipatory innovation through critical service design. The aim was to devise and showcase novel approaches through which designers can support public administration processes through new policies and services.
Students produced 8 future service concepts for GDS, promoting new ideas and future-thinking across a range of civic issues, including waste management, childcare, digital carbon, and biodiversity.
The concepts were showcased at an exhibition hosted in GDS offices, encouraging its employees to embrace innovative creative thinking to shape policy and create a better future for society.
Inspired by the potential impact and level of creativity from our collaboration, GDS has since created a new department, adopting our proposed methodologies to continue stimulating new solutions through design innovation.
