Diploma in Professional Studies by Aritro Roy, BA (Hons) Design Management (2025)

Last October, an email landed in my inbox titled “DPS introduction meeting next Tuesday...” I had no idea that this single line would change the direction of my education. That was my first introduction to the Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS). DPS is a sandwich year between your 2nd and 3rd year where students step into the industry to gain hands-on experience through internships or volunteering.

I study BA (Hons) Design Management, a broad course that opens doors to many roles. My first placement is at Particle6 Studios, London, as an Assistant Producer and Development Researcher. I help with pitch development, idea generation, and behind-the-scenes workflows that mix research, creative strategy, and production. I am also learning to use generative AI as part of my daily process.

Preparation for DPS begins long before placements. In our 2nd year, we had weekly classes with tutors and industry guests. They taught us practical skills: how to price our work, approach big brands, build standout portfolios, and create our own opportunities.

One of the biggest lessons for me was the art of negotiation. At one point, I had two offers: one in India and one in the UK. I had to decide which aligned best with my future and then explain my choice to both studios. I also learned how to pitch myself at events, present in interviews, and write a CV that keeps the reader engaged.

The journey hasn’t been easy. I faced many rejections, but they built resilience. Networking wins gave me confidence. I also realized the value of all the case studies and reflections we submit. They became the backbone of a portfolio I could show to employers.

Next, I’ll be working on my Self-Initiated Project (SIP), a core part of DPS. Each student develops a project to explore in depth, often linking it to their final major project or dissertation. I plan to expand a small business idea I started in my second year.

To me, DPS is an incredible way to test yourself in the real world before graduating. You gain experience, clarity, and time to find what you want to work on. The only caveat is graduating with the year below you, but that hardly matters if you find your community. If you are in your first year, here’s my advice: apply early. Many firms set deadlines over the summer, far earlier than most expect. Learning that too late was the biggest surprise of all.

My advice to those interested in DPS would be: start applying early. Many major firms set deadlines over the summer, long before you’d expect, and you don't want to risk missing out.
