Deek Hussain Jama is a graduate from BA (Hons) Journalism at London College of Communication.
I studied BA (Hons) Journalism and graduated in 2017
I would call myself a multimedia journalist.
I was born in the Netherlands but grew up in the UK. Now I’m back in Amsterdam.
I chose to study at LCC because of the unique way it functions compared to other universities. I liked the idea that I had the freedom to focus on the areas of journalism I felt suited me and could also dabble in other areas. I wouldn’t have worked as well if I had been forced to stick to just one method of reporting, for one type of news.
The most important thing that I have learnt on the course is that to be a journalist you need to be able to work with cameras, videos, software to be a well-rounded professional.
It has helped me to know exactly what is required of me in the industry. It isn’t just about creating stories, but also about how you can make these unique and what measures are needed to reach that goal. I have also developed a strong sense of assertiveness when aiming for what I want.
Creative, eccentric, unrestricted.
My advice would be to start producing work outside of the course and pitch them to newspapers and news networks to experience how the real world works. The third year is all about taking what you’ve learnt in the previous two years into action and gaining external experience separate from the university; this will make the transition smoother.
I’m currently a producer for a media network, Zoomin.TV. The headquarters are in Amsterdam but we have offices all over the world. My most interesting project so far was creating a series where we live stream a refugee’s journey through Europe. We focused on different angles for each part such as laws, community and history.
I don’t have a specific style as I still like to experiment, but being informative is a consistent characteristic in my work.
My Laptop, my phone and my notebook
My drive to succeed comes from wanting to contribute to something important during my time on earth.
I get inspiration from all over London. The fact that London is so busy and crowded guarantees that something will give you an idea to work on. I come up with a lot of my content on the tube.
My plan is to continue to produce human rights related content and travel the world. I’m also considering exploring in other fields such as art or sport.
