Biography

Professor Brian Lucid is the Dean of Design for the Design School at London College of Communication (LCC).

Brian is an internationally networked scholar and practitioner working across research, design, and academic leadership, with over 25 years of experience in creative arts higher education.

Before joining LCC, Brian led Ngā Pae Māhutonga – the Wellington School of Design – at Massey University in Wellington, New Zealand. Focusing on transforming and empowering communities, he concentrated Ngā Pae Māhutonga’s research and curriculum on developing inclusive, integrated and resilient solutions to social, racial, economic, and environmental justice issues, emphasising the critical examination of these complex problems within Aotearoa.

In his time at Massey, he laboured to ground the Design School’s curriculum upon hands-on, critical and reflective making. Brian grew the school in new and emergent curricular directions and forged dynamic partnerships with industry, including entertainment design studio Wētā Workshop and transportation-styling powerhouse ICONA Design Group.

Brian is a natural connector, convener, facilitator and communicator. He is skilled at bringing disparate stakeholders together in collective endeavours, shaping and leading viewpoints, generating new insights and approaches, and building lasting relationships.

Professor Lucid’s creative practice concentrates on conceptualising and implementing digital environments that facilitate creativity and decision-making. This research, undertaken with UX research, strategy and product design studio Proximity Lab, is commissioned by U.S. government agencies, Fortune 500 technology companies, global consumer product manufacturers, cultural institutions, and emerging start-ups.

His collaborations with Proximity Lab have seen him undertake next-generation product strategy and user experience for some of the world’s most successful enterprise service platforms.

Across his career Brian has developed original and impactful pedagogy in typography, information design, interaction design, user experience design, and creative coding. Thousands of audience members have attended his presentations at conferences and design workshops across five continents.
