Chenxing is a current student on MA Visual Effects at London College of Communication.
Why did you decide to study MA Visual Effects?
My interest in CGI as a study field goes back to my undergraduate degree, as I was interested in modelling, animation, and filmmaking. I was looking for an opportunity that would enable me to, not only to gain technical and practical expertise, but also explore potential career interests. Pursuing MA Visual Effects at LCC was a great fit. Moreover, London is prestigious in filmmaking and creative industries. I believed I could establish the principles of VFX workflows on this course and find the right niche after graduation.
Which project have you most enjoyed working on?
I particularly enjoyed the collaborative unit, as I was able to work with different talents, such as game designers, animators, filmmakers, and photographers. During the collaboration, the most exciting part was developing a professional network with teammates and mutual learning between different cultures. I also got valuable experiences on a cultural and personal level and understood the importance of respect, communication, time management, and contributions in teamwork.
What has been the highlight of the course so far?
I have gained much knowledge so far, including how to use industry-standard software such as Maya, Nuke, and Zbrush, along with key techniques such as modelling, texturing, lighting and shading. Apart from technical skills, the study of cinematography theories and film language allowed me to comprehend and apply lights and colours in practical projects, helping me make images appear real.
What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learnt on the course?
During the time on the course, I have realised that the VFX industry is categorized into Simulation FX, Animation, Modelling, Roto painting, and Compositing. It is important to practice my specialism and never stop learning and trying new things. Additionally, I was encouraged to engage with my classmates and tutors to get suggestions and learn new skills from the professionals.
How do you find the facilities available to you at London College of Communication?
It is straightforward to loan equipment at LCC, such as cameras, lights, tripods and laptops. I was surprised we could access brand new specialist facilities including motion capture studio, render farm, and green screen space in practical modules, which bolsters us to further step into film industries and dynamic job markets.
Has the course included any involvement with industry?
I’ve had opportunities to meet many intellectuals and experts within the field. The insight I was able to acquire through conversation with employees at the VFX studios was useful in that I not only learned what their job required, I was also told how the workflow operates in global film industries, and how to develop an entry-level ‘industry ready’ showreel.
Why would you recommend studying MA Visual Effects?
London College of Communication is an amazing place which has enhanced my talents and allowed me to develop new skills in art. I would highly recommend the MA Visual Effects course because the opportunity for personal, professional and academic growth is tremendous. Likewise, a special recommendation must be given to the creative staff at LCC, for the support and enthusiasm shown to me.
