Interview

Tell us a little bit about you, what are you working at the moment?

I'm currently working as a graphic designer at a geopolitics and security intelligence company. My role involves creating visualisations such as maps, charts, and infographics for reports.

I specialise in translating complex geopolitical insights into clear and effective visuals. This included terrorism heat-maps, risk rating tables, and indications of various geopolitics incidents. To do this, I collaborate with data analysts to determine suitable visualisation methods. I'm currently working with my fellow visualisation designers. I am excited to showcase a new project with them.

Why did you choose to study your course at LCC and how has it helped you to get where you are now?

I chose to study at LCC because of its renowned reputation in the field of Design. The program offered a comprehensive curriculum. This aligned perfectly with my career goals and aspirations. The emphasis on practical learning, combined with theoretical knowledge, appealed to me greatly. Moreover, LCC's strong industry connections provided numerous networking opportunities. Especially the access to real-world projects, which enhanced my skills and knowledge significantly.

For example, during my time on the course, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the International Detention Coalition (IDC). I produced visualisations for advocacy in the International Migration Review Forum in New York. This opportunity gave me hands-on experience in dealing with quantitative data. Additionally, the career support services at LCC played a crucial role in helping me secure my current position. Especially, given that it’s my first job in the UK.

What was the highlight of studying at LCC?

One of the highlights of studying at LCC was the creative environment fostered within the campus. The facilities and workshops allowed students to explore their work with different media. For instance, I once tried photo shooting at the photography studio with my peers. We created a video about visualising data of food waste. It was a fun experience, and the staff were extremely helpful and willing to provide professional advice when we did the shooting.

The diverse student body brought together individuals from various backgrounds and cultures. This created a rich learning experience. The opportunity to collaborate helped develop teamwork skills and gain different perspectives. One highlight project I made with my peers included 'The Food Print' video, co-created with Guari Sirure, Shuzhen Zhang and Jingqui Zhu.

What kinds of projects and collaborations did you work on during the course?

I had the privilege of working on a range of projects. This provided me with hands-on experience. It also allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. One memorable project involved collaborating with another student. We worked on a project together organised by Beyond Words Studio. Producing a series of visualisations and infographics to depict endangered species. This project helped me hone my technical skills. I also learnt the importance of communication and collaboration to achieving the project goals. It also gave me a glance at how to do pitching with companies and clients with my design.

What top tips would you give for prospective students who are applying to study at the postgraduate level at LCC?

My tips would be:

  • Be proactive: There are a lot of resources and facilities that are available in the college. Taking the initiative to try out workshops. Joining course-collaborative projects, networking, and other extracurricular activities will complement your studies. This all contributes to and enhances your skill set!
  • Take advantage of support services: LCC offers a range of support services. From academic advising, career counselling, and student support. Don't hesitate to seek help when needed.
  • Dive into the library: The library at LCC is a true gem! There are lots of books and magazines available for you to study and reference.
