George is a current student on MA User Experience Design at London College of Communication.
Why did you decide to pursue a postgraduate degree in user experience design?
After graduating from Northumbria, I decided to take a year out to gain work experience and travel. During this period, I felt that I wanted to expand my portfolio further and move into user experience design – a thriving industry that really grabbed my interest. I looked at the MA User Experience Design course page and it sounded exactly like what I wanted to do.
Which project have you most enjoyed working on?
I thoroughly enjoyed the project I completed with Fjord, it was very interesting and challenging working on a project for such a long period of time. I felt it really pushed my abilities and enabled me to learn skills I had not used before, something I have thoroughly enjoyed doing at UAL for my entire time studying here.
What has been your highlight of the course so far?
So far my highlight has been utilising the university facilities and being encouraged to learn new skills. Being exposed to creative coding, trying to understand code and write it, has been an exciting challenge for me.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learnt on the course so far?
I think my most valuable lesson learnt has been to think outside the box and use differing research and ideation methods. I think this way of thinking is very important and it is definitely improving me as a designer.
Has the course included any involvement with industry?
Yes it has, we have received various offers for internships and projects to work alongside companies throughout both terms. One project involved working with three different design companies, allowing us to learn more from industry professionals and present our outcomes to them.
Where do you hope this course will lead you?
Hopefully I will be able to get a job as a UX designer. I would like to travel and work at different companies experiencing various projects and challenges. My aim is to ultimately be better equipped for the industry and be able to progress as a designer.
Why would you recommend MA User Experience Design to prospective students?
I believe it has taught me to be a more open-minded thinker whilst exposing me to new research methods that I hadn’t used before. Furthermore, because it has enabled me to learn new skills and develop further as I designer, I will be more employable in the industry after I graduate.
