Interview

Why did you choose to study your course and why London College of Communication?
I’ve always enjoyed watching animated films and playing animated games and have found it to be equally fascinating to understand how the artists behind the work make it.

As UAL is the 2nd best arts university in the world (according to QS Rankings), and having read the BA (Hons) Animation course outline, I thought it was the best place for me to pursue my studies.

Have you had any opportunities to engage with industry whilst on the course?
UAL has many open lecture virtual events for students to attend. This is where industry experts and alumni speak to students about the work they’ve done and how to get into the industry, which is always eye opening.

The course has a ‘Professional Practice’ module, which allowed me to browse job opportunities in the industry. It also allowed me to think about my CV, cover letter, portfolio and social media platforms for me to share my work.

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?

  1. I think it’s really important to believe in yourself and your work - no idea is a silly idea.
  2. You need to keep yourself organised to meet deadlines and targets but it’s equally important to make sure you’re having fun, being creative and enjoying what you do.
  3. Just take full advantage of all the facilities the campus and course provide you with and make sure you utilise them as much as possible.

What has been the highlight of your LCC experience so far?
The biggest highlight for me so far has been using the VFX facilities in my first year. This was part of a Rotoscope project which was really fun to be creative with and I also had a fantastic team to work with.

Where would you like to be in five years' time?
I really want to become a 3D Animator in one of the mainstream Animation film or computer game companies.

I’d love to secure a position with Pixar, Dreamworks or Blizzard, Blur studios.

What is the most important thing you've learnt on the course so far?
It’s really important not to compare your work to anyone else's. My tutor raised this point with me early on in my studies, and it is very true.

I initially used to compare my work with other students, but there is no error in individual creativity.

Everyone has their own unique styles, imagination and approaches and this helps us to create our own individual work.

What's it like to be a student in London, and what would your dream day in the city be like?
I love London, and it’s great that LCC is based in Elephant and Castle, as it has great transport links to the rest of the city.

My dream day in the city would be to go to Hyde park for a stroll, head to some of London’s most iconic attractions and then spend the afternoon in Borough market to try some great street food from various international cuisines.

If you had to describe your LCC experience in three words, what would they be?
Enlightening, challenging, fun.
