Rebecca Kassab studied BA (Hons) Design Management and Cultures at London College of Communication.
Rebecca took part of UAL’s Integrated Study Abroad programme. programme. She joined LCC for one year from her home university in Brazil, Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais.
I’m from Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
For our Design Management 2 unit, we had to do a research proposal for any organisation or client that we saw fit. After going through a lot of theory about Co-Design and Human-Centred Design, I decided to create a proposal that investigates how charities could optimise their donations to refugees. I focused on CalAid, a non-governmental organisation coordinating the distribution of donations to the Calais refugee camp.
At the end of the proposal I suggested some ideas that we could test together to improve their logistics. It was a great opportunity to develop something that was meaningful to me, while combining great theory. I also really liked creating a zine, where I could talk more about feminism in Brazil, and explain a bit about what is going on there in terms of reproductive rights and women’s issues.
I’m planning to volunteer during the next CalAid collection point in London and bring with me a few prototypes of the proposed ideas. Let’s see how that goes
It was really interesting to know about the many cool projects that are being developed by undergraduate students just like me. It was truly inspiring. Talking from a personal point of view, I was too nervous and probably spoke too fast, but felt a great energy from the room.
No matter the weather, London is just a beautiful and interesting city to live in. I’m always impressed by the amount of cultural and art events constantly happening all over the city.
I’d say my favourite place in London has been Shoreditch. Even though it’s overpriced most of the time, I just like to walk around that area and feel its creative atmosphere.
I’m still not sure of what I’m going to do right after I graduate since I’m in my second year, but I see myself coming back to Brazil and applying all the knowledge I’ve gained and continue to gain at LCC. I believe there is so much you can do with service design and design thinking to improve people’s lives. I want to create meaningful things for me and for others.
