Biography

Shuyang graduated from MA Visual Effects at London College of Communication in 2021.

Interview

What attracted you to postgraduate study, and MA Visual Effects?
I have a keen interest in film production. Based on my undergraduate studies in digital media technology and from my previous internships in film and television, I had been looking for the right direction to take. I therefore decided to pursue a postgraduate study to learn more.

I believed MA Visual Effects to be a good bridging point and springboard for my future career path.

What experience did you have prior to joining the course?
Before studying MA Visual Effects I had some knowledge, software applications and practical experience in editing, post-production, sound composition, photography, programming and interaction design. I have also watched a lot of films, music videos and exhibitions which have provided me with a source of creative inspiration.

Can you tell us a little bit about your final major project? 
In recent years, there have been frequent occurrences of unusual weather and environmental anomalies.

More and more people are becoming concerned about changes in the environment. Haze has been a topical environmental issue in recent years.

The "Haze Blue" project was started and updated in the hope that after participating in the project in different ways in different places, the audience could pay attention to environmental issues and make some small changes in their daily lives to reduce the burden on the environment.

Considering COVID-19, people are limited in time and space. Together with Shuxiao Lin (MA Contemporary Art Practice student at Edinburgh University), I made the virtual production project, to remind everyone to protect nature and reduce air pollution.

Influenced by Olafur Eliasson’s works The Weather Project and Dark Ecology, we focused on the natural elements such as dust, air and color. We constructed virtual scenes mainly with Unreal Engine 4.

Did the course provide opportunities to engage with industry? 
Of course. Our Course Leader arranged for us to visit famous companies in the industry such as ILM.  Throughout the course, we interacted with professional VFX artists and also collaborated with students from different courses, within LCC and those studying at other UAL Colleges.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone thinking of studying the course, what would it be?

Don't hesitate if you are interested in this course. Define your goals and work towards them, and I'm sure you'll benefit greatly.

Why would you recommend studying your course to others?
It's a great opportunity for you to get to know the VFX industry. At the same time, you'll get to meet a lot of great teachers and students at LCC.

What was your personal highlight of studying your course at London College of Communication?
Being involved in some group collaboration projects. Lot of ideas that come together when students from different courses all come together.

During this process, I learnt a lot about different aspects and discovered more about my own strengths. We also had an exhibition of our work at Tate Modern, which was very memorable for me.

Now you have graduated, what are your plans for the future?
I have just finished working on the VFX of a film and currently interning as a 3D scene designer for a game company. In the future, I am considering a career in CGI in the film or games industry.
