Biography

Tobias is a Chilean-Italian filmmaker, researcher, writer, working across disciplines. He is a lecturer in multimedia production at London College of Communication.During the pandemic, Tobias completed a PhD in Hands-off Interactive Storytelling, from the University of York.

He comes from a filmmaking background and has specialised in immersive and interactive storytelling, particularly in the development and adaptation of filmmaking narrative techniques into a cinematic virtual reality. His current work looks at the relationship between Virtual Reality (VR), narrative perspectives, empathy and identification, through creative practice methods.

Tobias is interested in incorporating decoloniality and decolonial narratives into digital storytelling. He is a Visiting Research Fellow in the Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre (IGDC) at the University of York, where he works on the production of VR documentaries on postcolonial experiences in the north of England.Tobias has 9 years experience of research in arts and humanities, 15 years of teaching experience, and 11 years of production experience in either film, video, and academic projects.

He holds a diploma in masculinities and gender perspectives, and is a published novelist in his home country.He hopes to expand his research and practice in decolonial narratives and arts, using digital interactive and immersive technologies.

Tobias is one of the head organisers of Conference Ventana, an academic event focused on decolonial and postcolonial studies from an interdisciplinary perspective, pushed by PGRs and early career scholars, all based in countries of the so-called "global south".

When he isn't pretending to be an intellectual, Tobias plays the bass in cumbia, salsa, merengue and bachata bands, attends salsa classes, and tries his best to not buy more books.
