Viktoria graduated from MA Media, Communications and Critical Practice in 2020.
What attracted you to postgraduate study, and MA Media, Communications and Critical Practice (MCCP)?
I wanted to choose a theoretical course that would benefit my employment in fashion publishing and complement my photography background – hence, the choice of MCCP as it involves writing and creative production.
What experience did you have prior to joining the course?
I have a BA in Photography, specialising in fashion and portraiture, and worked for artist management agencies, like Art Partner, before coming onto the course.
Can you tell us a little bit about your final major project? What was your inspiration behind it?
My final major project was RAZD The Sustainable Fashion Magazine, which I produced in collaboration with multiple sustainable designers, industry experts and psychologist to promote fashion sustainability and give a platform for designers, as well as audience, to showcase their values for the better future of the industry.
The magazine involves editorials, some photographed by me and some from previous design projects, as well as journalism features written by me – which included the business of sustainable fashion industry, interviews with designers, artists, and industry experts.
Did the course provide opportunities to engage with industry?
Yes, in fact, my favourite part of the course was the Collaborative Unit. The module involves all the Postgraduate students at LCC choosing one of nine briefs to work on for a client and/or project. I chose the publication project, which is how I discovered my passion for writing and journalism.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone thinking of studying the course, what would it be?
Personally, choosing to do a Masters was the best decision of my life (so far), but I didn’t just attend the lectures and seminars – I tried to make the most I could out of the university’s resources, and network with other students and tutors. I attended workshops, webinars, extra courses, and took every opportunity that came my way to build my experience and get better.
Your time is as valuable as your future, so use it wisely!
What was the most important thing you learnt from studying MA Media, Communications and Critical Practice at postgraduate level?
To be more confident in my ideas and skills. I always feared of speaking in classrooms, but attending the course gave me the courage to work past it.
Also, evolving my creative communication and the scope of my professional skills to address important issues within the fashion industry in innovative ways.
Why would you recommend studying your course to others?
The answer alone should be Rebecca Bramall and Sara Marino – they are the best tutors and will go above and beyond for you! Also, the Collaborative Unit is an amazing opportunity not just to network, but also realise your other skills and passions you may have.
What was your personal highlight of studying your course at London College of Communication?
The Collaborative Unit, as mentioned before, has opened up so many doors for me through networking and realising my true potential. I have gained freelance work and internships due to the experience of producing and editing a magazine, as well as contacts and mentors within the university and the industry.
What are you currently working on / what are your plans for the future?
Alongside being a freelance journalist, I'm currently working on a brand new arts & culture magazine in partnership with LCC and Southwark council, as a content editor and journalist.
My goal is to be an editor of a fashion magazine, where I can combine all my values, passions and skills of fashion, photography, and journalism.
