Four London College of Communication BA (Hons) Photojournalism & Documentary Photography students have been working with photographer Briony Campbell, documenting the life of the London Sinfonietta Orchestra, in rehearsal, in performance and backstage.
Abdi Ibrahim, Claudia Vye, Hildegard Titus and Maja Smiejkowska were offered the chance when Briony – herself an LCC MA Photojournalism & Documentary Photography alumni – came to their class to speak to students about some of her work and look at portfolios – after which she chose four lucky photographers to work on the project with her.

Their first assignment was to document the Sinfonietta’s Stockhausen: Gruppen rehearsal at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 6 October (the photographs you can see here).

“The first day they were recording for BBC Radio 3,” Hildergard explains; “We were given full access to the rehearsal as well as some access backstage during breaks to take images of their musicians in a more relaxed state. After each session, Briony acts as our mentor by critiquing and gives us tips on pointers on how to shoot, where to shoot and how to edit down a selection of images.”

The four of them will continue working with the orchestra into the spring covering five more events between now and April.
“It really is an awesome experience and I feel extremely lucky to have access to the orchestra as well as all the doors and opportunities it has opened for me,” says Hildegard.
